WordPress Meetup: Wed 9th March 2011

After a successful WordCamp Melbourne 2011, the March WordPress meetup is (hopefully) set to see plenty of new faces attending.

The following topics will be discussed:

Ryan Allen – Using WordPress as a Knowledge Base (Wiki)
Ryan from Envato will be discussing how Envato use WordPress for their knowledge base and wiki.

James Collins – WordPress 3.1 New Features and Changes
James Collins will be reviewing WordPress 3.1 (which was released in early March), and discussing the new features and changes that it introduces.

WordPress Q and A
The usual question and answer session where people can ask any WordPress-releated questions.

We’ll then be visiting a local pub for some casual drinks and chit-chat.

When?

Wednesday 9th March 2011 at Openhub with a 6:30pm start.

Where?

Openhub
Level 1, 243 Collins St
(Manchester Lane)
Melbourne CBD

Manchester Lane is off Collins St in between Swanston St and Elizabeth St.

Please note that we have moved the meetup from RMIT because of the difficulties with people accessing the building out of hours.

Hungry?

Our sponsor, Envato has graciously offered to provide free pizza for this meetup.

WordPress Meetup – Wednesday, 9th of February 2011

Hey all,

In the lead up to WordCamp Melbourne 2011, we’re having a WordPress meetup this Wednesday the 9th of February at 6:30 PM at RMIT.

It will be in the RMIT Research Lounge:

Building 8, Level 5
RMIT City Campus (Swanston St)

This is where the meetup was held in October. Do note that it is not at OpenHub and not where the meetup was held in November in the downstairs room.

I’ll be giving a bit of an introduction and talking about what’s happening at WordCamp Melbourne with James.

I’m then going to give a little case study about the BuddyPress project I worked on for the New Zealand Defence Force.

Andrew Davis is going to give a presentation on using BackupBuddy and do a bit of a case study/interactive workshop, followed by an open-ended finish and a trip to the pub :)

WordCamp Melbourne 2011

WordCamp Melbourne 2011 is a two-day gathering for users of the WordPress blogging platform – from bloggers, designers, developers – anyone who uses or hacks on WordPress in some way.

The event runs over two days on February 26-27 2011, and tickets are only $50 (or $35 if you’re a student).

I highly recommend the conference for all people who are interested in WordPress (both novices and experts).

Please see wcmelb.org for more information.

WordPress Melbourne November 2010 meetup wrap-up

Thanks to everyone that attended the November WordPress Melbourne User Group meetup.

Troy Dean’s presentation on the The Jessica Watson digital strategy project was an informative real-life case study on the strengths and weaknesses of WordPress and also Business Catalyst.

Anthony Cole gave us some useful WordPress security and performance tips. We also ended up discussing various WordPress web hosting solutions.

Video User Manuals was also generous enough to give away two lifetime licenses to their WordPress User Manual product/service. The lucky recipients were James Giang and Christian Faltier.

James Giang was also nice enough to write up his own wrap-up of the meetup. Thanks James!

December 2010 Meetup

We are currently planning the December 2010 meetup. We’re hoping to organise an evening social BBQ meetup to help everyone wind down for the Christmas break. More information will be available soon!

Discussion topics for future WordPress Melbourne meetups

In our October meetup, we did a brainstorming session where people suggested topics that we could talk about at future meetups.

I have compiled these into a poll, where you can all vote on your favourite topic.

If you would like to suggest a different topic, or you’d like to do your own presentation, please get in touch.
